Background of the Study
Migration has become a transformative force in Akoko South-West, where traditional kinship structures have historically been the cornerstone of social organization. Extended families in this region have provided support systems through closely knit networks that facilitate caregiving, cultural transmission, and communal solidarity. However, as economic opportunities lure younger generations to urban centers, these traditional kinship ties are increasingly fragmented. The departure of key family members disrupts established roles and diminishes the intergenerational transmission of cultural values. Recent studies indicate that while migration may bring economic benefits, it simultaneously weakens the traditional social fabric (Adebisi, 2023; Olayinka, 2024). This study examines the effects of migration on kinship structures, exploring its socio-cultural impacts and proposing strategies to reinforce family bonds (Tijani, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Migration in Akoko South-West has led to the fragmentation of traditional kinship structures, reducing the extended family’s ability to provide mutual support and preserve cultural values. The movement of younger family members to urban areas has weakened traditional caregiving networks and intergenerational bonds. This disruption poses significant challenges for maintaining social cohesion and transmitting cultural heritage. Despite its importance, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the effects of migration on kinship systems. This study aims to address this gap by examining how migration impacts traditional kinship structures and exploring strategies to mitigate these effects.
